For sale here is what seems to be the oldest items we have ever had. The initial reaction to items such as this is that they are theatrical in nature but this one seems to be the real deal. If it is then it seems to date from around 1750, given the gauntlet cuffs and long fronted doublet shape of the waistcoat, it must be stated now though that this is slightly outside our expertise. The jacket is made of a watermarked gros grain material with appliqued details and a floral detail in the weave. Lined in a fine cotton / cotton silk mix and finished with a brass backed mother of pearl button. Within the larger windows of the applique detail there are also very delicate floral sections of silk with flowers, some of these have fallen out and others are a little loose. The waistcoat is a’doublet’ style with floral pattern silk front, a very fine cotton/silk lining and back and rear adjuster. The silk of course is delicate and torn but is actually all there and could perhaps be renovated. I just don’t see a theatre using the materials, detail, inside pockets and level of finish that you see here. In addition the size is a giveaway, this is cut for a male but is tiny by modern comparison. It doesn’t even fit the female mannequin we have, which is hardly large. Armpit to armpit – 15.5. Trouser sizing key – waist spare at waist x length spare at hem. Too small for use by anyone other than a child or petite woman. Good for the age really but not perfect, the silk has degraded and there are a couple of marks, the main body of the jacket and the details are good though and all buttons are present.
