Vintage Huntsman & Sons Savile Row covert coat 42 Long
Vintage Huntsman & Sons Savile Row covert coat overcoat 42 Long. If I wanted to be pedantic I’d say it’s because in the 1930s this would have been considered a spring weight overcoat (which is true) but I won’t. The reason you need this coat is because it will get cold again, rest assured, and you’ll have your new covert coat at the ready! This is a stunning example of Huntsman quality and styling. Unquestionably one of the smartest and most versatile of garments in menswear, the covert coat is a coat for all seasons (well nearly) and is equally suited to town AND country. The covert cloth itself is a high-twist woolen twill using variegated yarns so as to create a subtle mottled effect in the finished cloth. The color is often some variation of brownish tan. The “covert coat” is generally a single breasted coat with a fly front and “railroad stitching” at the cuffs and the hem. The distinctive stitching is a holdover from its origins as an equestrian/country coat where I can only guess the stitching served as a kind of reenforcement. The length of these coats varies from a short “fingertip” length to a long, sweeping version. This one is on the long side and very smart indeed. Huntsman should need no introduction from me, but needless to say they are one of the most revered tailors in the Row. Opened in 1849 they have long been known for sporting clothes and breeches. Their clothes are truly built to stand the test of time both in terms of style and construction. The make of this coat is superb and all hand made. Notice the buttonholes and even pick stitching are all done by hand. The horn buttons alone are works of art. Also a very gentle roping in the shoulder makes for a clean smart silhouette. This coat looks as good with jeans as it does with morning dress. The overall condition is excellent and it appears to have barely been worn. The only flaws are some superficial moth nips on the top back. They don’t go through and aren’t terribly noticeable. I have pictured them nonetheless. Chest: Laid flat under the arms from pit to pit measures 24. Point to point across the shoulders: 18 3/4. Sleeve: 26 (with at least an inch to let down and still have an extra inch seam allowance). Length from the base of the collar to the bottom of the skirt: 47. The photos should speak for themselves, but please feel free to ask if you have any questions and I will respond promptly.
