This is a genuine, 100% cotton Gabardine, Burberrys Prorsum, vintage/antique, men’s trenchcoat. The story behind the coat. My grandmother worked as a seamstress in the (now closed) Burberrys factory in South Wales throughout the 1970’s until the 1990’s. She tells me that she wanted to get him the highest quality coat possible which she knew meant a style made of 100% cotton Gabardine which came with a 95% wool and 5% camel detachable lining. My grandmother tells me that although my grandfather, an ex coal miner, was elated with the gift he was shocked at having received such a luxurious item and vowed to’only wear it for special occasions like his grandchildren’s graduations or if Wales ever win another Grand Slam’. He then, according to my grandmother, placed it in a protective clothing cover and put it in their wardrobe where it sat for several years. It was only a few years later, in the mid 90’s, when my grandfather developed emphysema from his time in the coal mines and so, as my grandmother tells me, the opportunities to dress up or be out of the house for long periods of time became very few and far between. He did attempt to wear the coat for my fathers second wedding in 2007 but at this point the coat was just too heavy for my him to wear and so after he’d tried it on it went straight back into the wardrobe where it had sat for the last 18 years. So, aside from a few’try ons’ this coat has never been worn and remains in perfect condition – this is particularly evident by the pristine condition of the leather buckles which are the main areas of visible wear on antique items. I’ve taken pictures of the various tags and labels to show that this is a pre-1991 Burberrys’ (not a post 1991 Burberry) item and was made in England. The batch code is B89D which I think might mean it was made in 1989 – although I struggle to find much information about batch code analysis of vintage Burberrys items online. The sizing states a RL 52 which I believe equates to a US/UK 42 Regular Long. My grandfather was around 6’1” and my grandmother tells me the length fitted him’beautifully’. The coat features belt’D-rings’, wedge back, Raglan Sleeves, and rare leather buckles which are in perfect, untouched condition. I recognise this is a very niche and specialist collectors item, particularly due to the fact that it’s never really been worn and is of the 100% cotton Gabardine material, and so I’ve done my best to include as much detail as possible but please do not hesitate to send me any questions/suggestions if you feel I’ve left some important features out! I obtained a lot of useful information on this website which has a 15 point list of what makes a quality trenchcoat and this coat happens to tick all 15 boxes! The most traditional color is camel / khaki. The raglan sleeve made its debut in the 19th century, and just like the Chesterfield coat. It owes it name to an aristocrat: FitzRoy Somerset 1st Baron Raglan. By its military origin, a trench coat is traditionally double breasted and features ten buttons on the front. The infamous shoulder tabs often seen on military uniforms. Gun Patch / Storm Flap. Hook & Eye and Throat Latch. Just below the large collar, you will find a hook and eye that allows you to keep easily your collar closed up all the way. Deep Yoke Back Saddle. The deep back yoke allowed the water roll onto the floor rather than down the back of the wearer. This feature is not seen on many other garments and as such, it is unique to the trench. For soldiers to be able to move quickly, every trench coat had a vent. The storm pockets can be buttoned up from the outside to keep out the rain. Leather buckles were available back then.
