The Signal Corps patch on the right-chest signifies a member of a unit specializing in and providing communications of all sorts and all levels, from field phones with wire run from one fighting position to its neighbor, to around-the-world commo. The US Army has had troops stationed regularly in South Korea since the 1950’s. This zipper and the quilting work inside could be of that vintage, or of the 90’s–dunno, but prolly earlier rather than later. Jackets like these were obviously not tactical (think camo) but rather worn as a badge of pride in one’s unit, like a football letterman’s jacket or a class ring or a secret handshake. But there’s nothing’secret’ about this embroidery. It is loud, menacing, in-your-face, and gorgeous. The royal blue material is assumed to be nylon, and several of the checked boxes above are also assumptions, as the only tag is the label you see below the collar. Furthermore, with the exception of the Signal Corps patch and the Name patch, all other embroidery is sewn directly into the blue nylon. Sadly, the hood be gone. My GF sews and tells me that the quilting is high-quality work. I see no evidence of feathers/down, even though parts of Korea is (sic) one of the coldest inhabited places on the earth. The elastic hem and cuffs is still elastic but not terribly strong. The main zipper runs smoothly and the snaps snap. The pencil pocket zipper on the left sleeve runs a little rough. Rank, if and when worn, would have been on the shoulder epaulets. The 48 stars were aligned in 8 columns and 6 rows. This has that geometric shape and may be a factor in dating the piece. If anyone cares to add to this description with’provenance’, I’d love to hear it.
